Dear Future Lesley,
There are those times in life that accelerate growth and encourage you to rethink the way you see and behave in the world. I’m assuming that the remainder of the year will be that type of experience. So, I’m taking a moment to write a letter – to you – my future self. Already, I’ve travelled nearly 24 hours to arrive at a location so distant from both a geographical sense and likely more impactful – a cultural sense.
I hope you use this year to re-center yourself, to remember the blessings that you’ve been given in this life and squash all entitlement you’ve built up over the past decade living in a land of peace, freedom and luxury.
It is really difficult to leave routine and comfort and familiarity and take on something complete outside your norm. I ask you to remain open-minded, patient and flexible. When it feels so hard that you want to break, remember to lean into Jesus.
The military is a young person’s game. I’m not sure I’ve ever recognized my age as much as I have over the past few weeks. That is not an excuse to allow yourself to be weak or exclusive. Bring insight and experience to the table and don’t beat yourself up.
Remain humbled and grateful for the support and overwhelming love your husband, children, parents, church, friends and family continue to pour in your direction. As hard as each day is here, your absence does not go unnoticed and they carry the load for you each day.
Above all maintain your honor, courage and commitment. At the end of this, walk away with the increased understanding that every person on this earth struggles, and we must each bear out those struggles as they are given us through love and understanding.
With much love and hope for the future,
Present Lesley
Thank you and stay safe!
